Generative AI News
OpenAI’s 12 days of ‘shipmas’ include Sora and new reasoning model
By far, the most significant generative AI news item of the week is the rollout of the 12 Days of OpenAI, which, only after the first three days, has brought some holiday surprises. Here’s what we’ve seen so far:
The full version of o1 is here! If you’ve been reading along with us since the summer, you should know that OpenAI launched its reasoning models o1-preview and o1-mini back in mid-September. Now the preliminary o1-preview has been replaced with the more powerful o1, which is only available to paid ChatGPT users. What’s more, OpenAI also launched o1 pro mode, an even more powerful version of o1 that only available with a new ChatGPT Pro account, which comes in at a whopping $200 per month (!!!). With a ChatGPT Pro account, users also get unlimited access to o1 (whereas ChatGPT Plus users are restricted to a measly 50 messages per week with o1).
Day 2 brought us a more technical development, a new technique called Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT), “a way to customize its AI models for developers who want to adapt OpenAI's algorithms for specific kinds of tasks, especially more complex ones.” If the Day 1 launch of o1 was for the masses, the Day 2 launch of RFT is more significant at the enterprise level. Researchers, universities, and enterprises can apply for early access to OpenAI’s RFT Research Program to implement the technique to customize their own models.
OpenAI’s text-to-video tool is finally available as of yesterday! Or at least, for those user who managed to sign up early enough, as later in the day OpenAI disabled Sora signups due to such a high level of traffic. Take a look at What We Found below to see Sora in action. Also note that a few other video generation tools launched this week; check out the Quick Hits below.
Tune in next week for more on the 12 Days of OpenAI!

Tool of the week: Eddie AI
Eddie is an AI-powered video editor that can perform edits based on your text prompts. You can ask Eddie to list the key topics in the video, identify soundbites and create edits based on topics. Examples include:
“Create a 1-minute cut from the interview.” Eddie will find key moments and trim it down.
“Find the part where they talk about [insert topic].” Eddie will locate and cut the soundbite.
