OpenAI Aims to Release New AI Model, ‘Strawberry,’ in Fall

Two weeks back we shared the story that OpenAI was working on Strawberry, a new foundation model. Today we received further confirmation of the development of Strawberry, along with news that the model may be coming this fall. We’ll be waiting with baited breath to see the extent to which Strawberry will surpass the capabilities of GPT-4o.

Why AI can’t spell ‘strawberry’

It’s ironic that OpenAI’s is developing a new foundation model called ‘Strawberry’ when GPT-4o, the top performing OpenAI large language model, cannot even spell the word. Dig into the article if you want to learn why transformers are not well-suited to count the number of occurrences of the letter ‘r’ in ‘strawberry’ even though they can output the word without a hint of trouble.

Tool of the week: Gauth

Gauth is a new app from TikTok parent company ByteDance that bills itself as an AI study companion. More specifically, Gauth lets you take a photo of your homework questions, and then it answers those questions using AI.

It says it can help with Math, Chemistry and more. It also lets you choose from different AI models, including its own, ChatGpt and Gemini. So you can explore how well each model performs. Prof. Snider tried it out in a couple of his classes.

What we found

We have some more details on how Arizona State University is implementing ChatGPT Edu throughout the school. A post on the ChatGPT website says that ASU started with an AI Innovation Challenge early this year.

ASU faculty and staff were asked to submit proposals for how ChatGPT could be used in one of three areas: Supporting teaching and learning, Advancing research for public good or Enhancing the future of work.

More than 400 proposals were received, which resulted in more than 200 projects. ASU now has a library of Custom GPTs that include a writing companion and a bot that helps students in the College of Health Solutions practice patient-provider interactions through role-based conversations.
